Softball Splits With RiverHawks

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Pittsburg State softball team (31-17, 16-8 MIAA) split games of a doubleheader with Northeastern State (20-29, 8-15 MIAA) on Saturday (April 25) afternoon at the PSU softball complex. Pitt State took game one, 1-0, but fell in games two, 6-4.

In game one, pitcher Emmie Robertson scattered three hits on the way to a complete game shut out. She struck out six batters while walking two.

While Pitt State outhit Northeastern State, 6-3, the Gorillas lone run scored off a solo home run by Cheslyn Mitchell in the bottom of the fourth.

The Gorillas got in the hole early in game two and though they worked to come back, they ran out of innings.

Northeastern State scored first in the top of the first on a walk, an error and a base hit.

Four more runs scored on three hits and two walks in the top of the second to give the RiverHawks a 5-0 lead.

Pitt State finally got on the board in the bottom of the third as Jordan Bradshaw led off the inning with a home run to center. With one out, Katy Remy added a double. Cheslyn Mitchell drove a base hit through the right side to score Remy to cut the NSU lead to 5-2.

Two hits and a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth put Northeastern State up by four at 6-2.

It took the Gorillas until the bottom of the fifth to answer. Remy led off the inning with a double to center. A one-out home run to right by Nicole Nease brought Pitt State within two, 6-4.

Northeastern State brought in, Wooldridge, their starter from game one, and she sat down the next six Gorillas in order to secure the RiverHawk win and earn a save. Laura Fleck earned the win.

Lynsey Conner started game two for the Gorillas and took the loss, giving up five of the six runs. Robertson pitched five innings in relief. She gave up one run, while scattering six hits. She struck out nine NSU batters. Robertson now has 200 strikeouts on the season and needs two more to set a school record for single season strikeouts.

Pitt State will play its final home games on Sunday (April 26) at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The Gorillas will honor their four seniors, Avery Beard, Devon McCreath, Cheslyn Mitchell and McKenzie Rynard between games of the doubleheader.
