OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Pitt State could not find its rhythm offensively or in the pitching circle as it lost to Central Missouri twice on Championship Saturday in the MIAA Softball Tournament. The Jennies won the first game, 6-1, forcing a second game for the title and the automatic NCAA Tournament berth. Central Missouri also took the second game, 7-1.
In game one, the Jennies scored six runs on five hits and two Pitt State errors. The Gorillas had one run on five hits and one Central Missouri error.
The Gorillas now have to wait until Monday at 9 a.m. to find out if their MIAA Tournament showing was enough to push them into an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament.
Pitt State wasted no time getting on the board in game one, scoring a run in the top of the first. Katy Remy ripped a one-out single to center. Nicole Nease drew a two-out walk and Kylie Guthier busted a hit through the left side to load the bases.
From there the Gorilla bats would cool, as the team got only three more hits in the remaining six innings.
Two walks, a hit batters and two hits, including a two-out grand slam by Carlie Rose, gave the Jennies a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning.
Central Missouri added two more runs in the sixth. Lauren Mabe led off the inning with a home run to left center. Two errors and a base hit added another run for a 6-1 Central Missouri lead.
Game two saw Central Missouri put up seven runs on eight hits and a Pitt State error. Pitt State had only one run on one hit.
The second game started much the same way the first game ended. A two-run home run in the top of the first gave the Jennies an early 2-0 lead.
Neither team scored in the second, but the Jennies put up a big inning in the top of the third. Central Missouri scored five runs on three home runs to take a 7-0 lead.
Central Missouri pitcher Katie Shockley had a no hitter going through four innings, but Pitt State's McKenzie Rynard broke that open in the fifth. Rynard hit her 10
th home run of the season to break up the no hitter and put the Gorillas on the board.
Emmie Robertson took the loss in both games. She pitched the complete game in game one and 2.2 innings in game two. Guthier came in to relieve her with two outs in the third. Guthier did not give up a run in her 4.1 innings.
