Volleyball Opens 2015 Season at Washburn Invitational

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The 2015 Gorilla Volleyball squad will open its second season under head coach Jenny Mueller at the Washburn Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 4 and 5.

The Gorillas open the tournament with Augustana at 1 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 6:30 p.m. nightcap with South Dakota School of Mines. Saturday's action opens with Drury at 11:30 a.m. and ends with Black Hills State at 3:30 p.m. It is the first weekend of play for all the teams in the tournament.

Pitt State will have a new look as it has lost five of the top six point scorers from a year ago. The positive side of this is that Mueller and her staff added 10 new players in the off season. The early part of the season will be exciting as the Gorillas learn to gel on the court. Luckily, two senior setters in Hayley Hansford and Taylyn Schwartz will be  controlling the offense. Thier experience should bring some calm to the wealth of new point scorers. Another known strong point for Pitt State will be its defense. Juniors Taylor Wright and Ashlen Schwartz both helped to provide defensive sparks and strong serve receive skills last season and will be relied upon heavily for that as well.

Live stats will be available for all matches throughout the weekend, with links listed on the volleyball schedule page.
