Box Score KEARNEY, Neb. – The Gorilla men's basketball team lost to Nebraska-Kearney, 91-75, on Monday evening (Jan. 4) at the UNK Health and Science Center.
Trey Starks led the Gorillas with 19 points. Josiah Gustafson and Lamine Dieng each added 13. Both were also just short of double-doubles as the each had nine rebounds as well. Twelve of Gustafson's 13 points came in the second half. Jaxon Holden added 12.
The Gorilla offense was cold in the first half, as the team shot only .345 (10-for-29) overall and .200 (2-for-10) from long range. Conversely, the Lopers shot 42 percent overall and 57 percent from three. The Lopers also made 14 free throws compared to just six for Pitt State.
Pitt State started the second half better, making six of its first eight shots. However, the Lopers continued their hot shooting and were able to stretch the lead to 17. Pitt State made a little run with under five to go, capitalizing on some UNK turnovers to make the score 79-69.
The Gorillas cut the Loper lead to single digits, 84-75, with a Starks three with just over two minutes to go. UNK answered with four quick points to take the lead back 13 and a dunk by Connor Beranek with 27 seconds left sealed the win.
Beranek led all scorers with 25 points.
Pitt State will take on the Central Missouri Mules back at John Lance Arena on Thursday (Jan. 7) at 7:30 p.m.
