Wildcats Hold Off Gorillas, 85-72, in Exhibition Game Friday

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Barry Brown led four players in double figures with 17 points as Kansas State University defeated Pittsburg State University, 85-72, in the exhibition game opener for both schools Friday (Oct. 28).
 
The Wildcats led by as many as 26 points, 70-44 with 11:55 to play, but the Gorillas battled back to cut the deficit in half, at 73-60, with 6:21 remaining.
 
Three newcomers paced the Gorillas in double figure scoring. Junior transfer Elijah Gaines scored a team-leading 12 points, while freshman Brandon Clifford added 11 and junior transfer Isaiah Hicks chipped in with 10.
 
Senior transfer Brandon Phelps added nine points, while freshman R.J. Pair finished with eight.
 
The Gorillas shot 37.2 percent from the field in the contest, converting 22 of 59 shots from the floor. Pitt State also made 19 of 23 free throws in the game.
 
Dean Wade (14), Xavier Sneed (13) and Isaiah Maurice (10) also finished in double figures for the Wildcats, who shot 44.3 percent from the field (31-70) in the contest.
 
Pitt State will return to action Tuesday (Nov. 1) when the Gorillas travel to Stillwater, Okla., to wrap up exhibition action against Oklahoma State University.
