PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Emporia State scored 20 runs on 20 hits and three Pitt State errors, while the Gorillas plated five runs on 10 hits and one Hornet error for a 20-5 final in the series finale at Ortolani Field on Sunday (Feb. 28).
Gage Grant and Jake Durossette each went 2-for-3 with a double each on the day, with Grant hitting in three RBI. Jacob Boylan and Andrew Vogelbaugh each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Vogelbaugh hit a home run.
Pitt State starter Blake Vail took the loss in his first appearance of the season. Jordan Plank earned the win for ESU to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Emporia State scored five runs in the top of the first on three triples, a home run and a Gorilla error. Vail was replaced by Brandon Martinkus who struck out the final two batters to end the inning.
The Gorillas got a run back in their half of the first. With two outs, Boylan grabbed an infield base hit. Vogelbaugh reached on an error. Christian Arnold walked to load the bases. Grant drew a second two-out walk to bring home Boylan.
Emporia State got that run back in the top of the second to take a 6-1 lead.
Vogelbaugh hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third to make the score 6-2.
The Hornets added three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth, but Pitt State added two more to their total in the bottom of the fifth. Boylan led off with a base hit through the right side. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. Arnold drew a walk with one out. Both runners came home on Grant's bases clearing double to make the score 13-4.
Neither team scred in the sixth, but Emporia State put together a big seven-run seventh to put the game out of reach.
Pitt State scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh as Vogelbaugh scored on an Arnold double.
Pitt State will now hit the road to take on Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo. on Tuesday and will resume conference play next weekend at Central Missouri on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
