Box Score TOPEKA — Josiah Gustafson scored a game-high 27 points to help spark the Pittsburg State University men's basketball team to an 82-71 road win over Washburn University Wednesday (Feb. 3).
The Gorillas (12-10, 7-9 MIAA) won for just the third time since 1978 at Lee Arena, snapping an eight-game losing streak on the home floor of the Ichabods (12-8, 8-7 MIAA).
Pitt State never trailed in the contest, but the Gorillas weren't able to pull away and take control until the game's final five minutes.
Gustafson hit a 3-pointer to turn a 65-62 edge into a six-point margin wih 5:20 to play. Denton Hays added a jumper 30 seconds later for a 70-62 Pitt State lead.
Javis Flynn and Gustafson added back-to-back 3-pointers to make it a 76-64 game with 3:46 to play. The Ichabods weren't able to counteract the run.
Gustafson made 11 of 17 shots from the floor, including five of eight 3-pointers. He has now scored 1,069 points in 80 career games, breaking into Pitt State's career top 20 scoring list at No. 17.
Dakota Jones added 15 points for the Gorillas, while Trey Starks finished with 14 and Hays chipped in with 12. Pitt State shot 51.7 percent from the field in the contest – 56.7 percent in the second half (17 of 30).
Brady Skeens led three Washburn players in double figures with 16 points. He added a game-high 12 rebounds for a double-double.
