Lions Advance to Kansas City With 77-68 Win Over Gorillas

PITTSBURG — Cory Arentsen scored a game-high 28 points to lead four Lindenwood University players in double figures as the visiting Lions knocked off Pittsburg State University, 77-68, in the first round of the 2016 MIAA Championships at John Lance Arena.

The No. 9 seed Lions (16-13) snapped a seven-game losing streak and advance to the quarterfinals to face the MIAA regular season champion and No. 1 seed Northwest Missouri State University Friday (Mar. 4) at 6 p.m. at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The No. 8 seed Gorillas (16-13) season came to a close.

LWU shot 56.9 percent from the field (29 of 51) in the contest and the Lions outrebounded the Gorillas 36-23 in the contest. Pitt State, minus second-team All-MIAA guard Josiah Gustafson, shot just 39.7 percent from the floor (23 of 58). Gustafson had been battling a shoulder injury and was unable to take the court Tuesday.

Trey Starks scored a team-leading 27 points in his final game for the Gorillas. Starks made nine of 17 shots, including three 3-pointers. Fellow seniors Denton Hays and Javis Flynn scored nine and seven points, respectively. Hays added six rebounds and three blocked shots, while Flynn added three assists and four steals. Chris Owens chipped in with nine points and a team-leading eight rebounds, while Dakota Jones added 10 points.

LWU got 17 points from Brad Newman, 16 from LJ McIntosh and 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds from Stanislas Heili.
