Strong Start to the Weekend for Gorilla Softball

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Pittsburg State softball team got off to a great start on the weekend at the Apple Market Classic with wins over Concordia-St. Paul, 3-2 in eight innings, and Wayne State, 13-0 in five innings.

The Gorillas tallied 24 hits over the two games, including four home runs in the second game. Against Concordia, six different players had hits, led by Katy Remy with a 3-for-4 game. Nicole Nease and Jenna Bolton were each 2-for-4. Kylie Guthier, Catie Cummins and Alex Perez had a hit a piece.

Morgan Myers earned the win in the circle, as she pitched the full eight innings. She gave up six hits and five walks, while striking out four Bear batters. She is now 7-4 on the season.

Emmie Robertson improved to 12-2 on the season with the game two win. She gave up only three hits, struck out seven and walked one.

In the game against Wayne State, eight of the nine Gorilla batters had a hit. Jordan Bradshaw went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, five RBI and two home runs. Ashton Pratt was 3-for-4. Nease and Perez were each 2-for-3. Nease hit a two-run home run. Guthier had the other Pitt State home run, good for three RBI.

Concordia got on the board early in the first game of the day, plating their leadoff runner with two hits in the top of the first.

Pitt State would not have ananswer until the bottom of the third. With two outs and Nease on first, Guthier drove a base hit through the right side, moving Nease to third. Bolton added a base hit to left to score Nease and tie the game at 1-1.

The Bears scored immediately in the top of the fourth. Three walks and a wild pitch led to a 2-1 Concordia lead.

The Gorillas again took their time to respond, this time waiting until there were two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Remy started the two-out rally with a double to left, then moved to thrid on a wild pitch. Nease dropped a hit in right field to bring Remy home for the tie and to send the game into extra innings.

The Bears got a runner to third in the top of the eighth, but were not able to score.

Kris VanHoosen ran for Kylie Guthier and was placed at second to start the inning due to international tiebreaker rules. She moved to second on a Bolton bunt single. With runners at first and third, Bolton stole second as an intentional walk was delivered to Perez to load the bases. Cummins hit the ball to the Bears' second baseman who tagged Perez running to second, then threw home, but the tag was not applied on VanHoosen who scored the game-winning run, essentially ending the game with a walk-off fielder's choice.

Pratt and Sierra Hall led off the game with Wayne State with back-to-back bunt singles. Remy was safe on a fielder's choice as Pratt was put out at third. After the second out, Guthier started the Gorilla home run derby with a big three-run home run to center.

The one run in the second inning was a solo home run by Bradshaw, her first of two in the game.

Remy led off the third inning with a base hit. Nease followed with a two-run home run for a 6-0 lead. This time the Gorillas were not satisfied with the long ball. Guthier reached on an error. She was out at second on a fielder's choice that left Bolton safe at first. Perez followed with a base hit to center. Cummins drove a double to center to score Bolton, followed by a base hit to left by Bradshaw to score Perez to go up by eight runs.

The fourth inning saw the Gorillas plate five more runs. Nease got the Gorillas rolling with a one-out base hit through the left side. Andi Cumbie came in to pinch run for her. Guthier reached on an error that allowed her to go all the way to second and Cumbie to third. Another Wildcat error scored Cumbie and put Bolton on base. A Perez base hit through the left side loaded the bases. Cummins reached on a fielder's choice that scored Guthier, but put Bolton out at third. Then Bradshaw stepped up and hit her second home run of the game, this time a three-run shot to center.

Pitt State continues play in the Apple Market Classic on Saturday at noon against Augustana and at 4 p.m. against Mary.
