ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Sophomore pitcher Emmie Robertson set single-game and career records for strikeouts in her start Saturday (Apr. 9) but the Pittsburg State University softball team dropped a pair of games to No. 18 ranked Missouri Western State University, falling by scores of 1-0 in 10 innings and 7-1.
The sweep dropped Pitt State (33-14, 17-5 MIAA) out of first place in the MIAA standings and into a tie for second place with Northwest Missouri State University (33-9, 17-5 MIAA). MWSU (34-10, 19-3 MIAA) moved into first place in the standings with the twin victories.
Robertson (18-7) fanned a school record 18 batters as she locked horns with Janie Smith (18-7) in a pitcher's duel. Her final strikeout of the day gave her 465 for her two-year career – passing the former Pitt State record of 464 Ks set by Sheila Miller from 1981-85.
The Gorillas, who were blanked 1-0 in nine innings and 3-0 by Northwest Missouri Friday at Maryville, Mo., saw their bats quieted again Saturday as the Griffons held them off the scoreboard until the seventh inning of game two. Pitt State's scoreless streak covered 32 innings before Nicole Nease scored on Jenna Bolton's infield single in the last inning of Saturday's nightcap.
Pitt State will return to action Wednesday (Apr. 13) when the Gorillas host Newman University in its final home twinbill of the season at 4 p.m. (CDT).
