PITTSBURG -- Andrew Vogelbaugh reached base in all five plate appearances, belting a pair of home runs to lead the Pittsburg State University baseball team to an 8-5 non-conference victory over Southwest Baptist University Tuesday (May 3) at Al Ortolani Field.
Vogelbaugh connected on a three-run homer as part of a four-run second inning for Pitt State (15-30). He added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run homer in the eighth to stretch a tenuous 6-5 lead to an 8-5 margin. In between, he delivered fourth and sixth-inning singles. He drew a walk in his first inning plate appearance.
SBU (21-26) rallied from the 4-0 deficit to tie the game with four runs in the fifth inning, but the Gorillas took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Jake Durossette delivered the go-ahead single, scoring Gage Grant who drew a one-out walk earlier in the inning. Chase Kilgore, who also walked in the frame, scored following an SBU throwing error.
Pitt State starter Blaine Fisher allowed just one hit through four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. He gave up a two-run double and an RBI triple in the fifth after an error extended the frame. Ty Rowe (4-3) got the final out of the fifth to earn the win.
Four more relievers -- Geroge Brandecker, Cooper Gardner, Nick Brandecker and Ryan McKay -- combined to limit SBU to a pair of hits and one unearned run the rest of the way. McKay notched his fourth save of the year in a return to a closer role. He worked a one-two-three ninth.
The Gorillas will wrap up the season with a three-game MIAA series with Lindenwood University beginning Thursday (May 5). Pitt State will host the Lions at 7 p.m. that night, then take on LWU at 6 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
