PITTSBURG — The Lindenwood University baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally from an 8-6 deficit and eventually take a 10-9 victory over Pittsburg State University.
The Lions (23-26, 17-21 MIAA) got a two-run go-ahead double from Drew Quinones in the frame. LWU also capitalized on three walks as Pitt State reliever Ryan McKay (2-6) was unable to close the door on the Lions.
Gage Grant delivered a three-run home run as part of a four-run eighth innng for the Gorillas (15-32, 9-28 MIAA) as they rallied from a 6-4 deficit to take the short-lived 8-6 lead.
Down 10-8 going to the bottom of the ninth, Pitt State trimmed the margin to 10-9 when pinch hitter Cole Brecheisen was hit by a pitch with the bases loads. LWU reliever Jevon Boyd then induced a pop out and a fly ball to end the threat and the game.
Pitt State starter George Brandecker settled down after a three-run first inning, allowing four runs on four hits and fanning 12 batters.
The Lions and Gorillas will wrap up the regular season with the final game of the series at 1 p.m. Saturday (May 7).
