PITTSBURG -- The Pitt State women's basketball team improved to 18-3 on the season overall and 10-2 in league play with a 72-60 win over Northeastern State (6-13, 2-9 MIAA) on Saturday (Jan. 28).
Mikaela Burgess led the Gorillas with 25 points, including 13 of the team's first 15. Shelby Lopez was the team's only other double figure scorer with 15 points. The two combined for 12 threes in the game, seven from Burgess and five from Lopez. Madison Northcutt pulled down 10 rebounds. Paige Lungwitz led the team with four assists and no turnovers. She also had six rebounds.
Pitt State led for all but the first five minutes of the game. Burgess made back-to-back threes, then added a layup for the lead. The Gorillas grabbed their first double digit lead on a Lopez three with 6:20 to go in the second quarter. Pitt State led 32-22 at the half. Burgess opened the second half with a three. The RiverHawks were able to cut the lead to single digits once more before Lopez hit another three to give the Gorillas a double digit lead for good. The team's largest lead of the game, 72-53, came on a Hadyn Herlocker three with 1:52 to go in the game.
The Gorillas will not have a midweek game next week, but will return to action against Missouri Southern at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 in Joplin.
