BOLIVAR, Mo. — The Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team scored on back-to-back possessions to break open a two-point game en route to a 58-52 victory over Pittsburg State University Saturday (Feb. 11) at the Meyer Sports Complex.

The Bearcats (14-10, 7-8 MIAA) led 54-52 following a pair of free throws from Pitt State's Brandon Clifford with 2:32 to play in the game.

Brian Patterson then hit a driving layup 18 seconds later and, after Elijah Gaines' runner was blocked by SBU's Kalund Brown, Kai Woodfall buried a jumper for a six-point Bearcat lead with 1:17 to go.

SBU held Pitt State (4-19, 2-13 MIAA) without a field goal from the 6:42 mark of the second half until R.J. Pair made a basket with four ticks remaining. The Gorillas made five of six free throws during the stretch, while missing five shots from the floor.

Isaiah Hicks scored a team-leading 15 points for the Gorillas, while Gaines added 10. Brandon Clifford and Creighton Brinker chipped in with nine apiece.

Patterson and Carter Dan scored 15 apiece to pace the Bearcats.

Pitt State will return home next Thursday (Feb. 16) to host top-ranked and undefeated Northwest Missouri State University at 7:30 p.m. (CST) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.
