Softball Wins Two in Bentonville

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- The Pitt State softball team earned a 5-3 win over Southern Nazarene and a 1-0 win over Minnesota Duluth in the second day of the Eight State Classic at Bentonville's Memorial Park on Saturday (Feb. 18).

The Gorillas used five hits to score five runs in the 5-3 win over Southern Nazarene. The Crimson Storm scored its three runs on three hits and two Pitt State errors.

Pitt State scored four of its five runs in the top of the first. Kaity Kukowski was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. Sierra Hall followed with a bunt single. Nicole Nease hit her first home run of the season to give the Gorillas a 3-0 lead. Kylie Guthier kept the offense going with a base hit. Kala Holder added a double and Katy Remy walked to load the bases. Southern Nazarene made a pitching change and got the next two Gorilla batters out. Shelby Miller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring Guthier home and put the Gorillas up by four runs.

Southern Nazarene put up two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth.

The Gorillas scored their final run in the top of the seventh as Jenna Bolton's base hit brought home Kala Holder for the 5-3 win.

All four pitchers saw time in the circle. Morgan Myers started and pitched 3.1 innings before being replace by Bree Cornett. Cornett earned the win to improve to 4-0 on the season. Emmie Robertson pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn the save, her second of the season.

The game against Minnesota-Duluth was a pitchers' duel. Pitt State managed five hits, but was not able to score a run until the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Lawren McKinney knocked a base hit up the middle. Kylie DeClue came in to pinch hit and reached on an error. Bolton added a base hit to load the bases for Miller. Miller blasted a shot down the left field line to score McKinney for the win.

The Bulldogs did not get a hit until the sixth inning and that was their only hit of the game. Robertson struck out 13 batters. She did not allow a walk, but did hit three batters.

The Gorillas are now 9-5 on the season. They will wrap up Eight State Classic play on Sunday (Feb. 19) with a 9 a.m. game against Minnesota State-Mankato and an 11 a.m. game against Wayne State.
