PITTSBURG – The Pittsburg State University women's basketball team clinched at least a share of its first MIAA Regular Season Championship in 21 years Saturday (Feb. 18) thanks to the Gorillas 74-58 win over Missouri Western State University as well as Lindenwood University's 69-67 road win over the University of Central Missouri.
The No. 7 ranked Gorillas (23-3, 14-2 MIAA) can claim the regular season title outright Tuesday (Feb. 21) when they host Missouri Southern State University at 5:30 p.m. (CST) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.
Madison Northcutt posted game highs of 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Gorillas. Hadyn Herlocker added 10 points and five assists and Paige Lungwitz added eight points and six rebounds on Senior Day for Pitt State.
The Gorillas overcame a 22 of 54 (.407) shooting day by converting 24 of 27 free throws in the game. Pitt State outscored Western, 24-5, at the foul line and the Gorillas owned a 41-25 rebounding advantage on the Griffons.
Sefulu Faavae (12), Chelsea Dewey (11) and Melia Richardson (10) all scored in double figures for Western (19-7, 10-7 MIAA).
