PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University women's basketball team overcame an early 10-point defict and exploited Washburn Univeristy's zone defense with 14 3-pointers as the Gorillas posted a 77-59 victory over the Ichabods Saturday (Jan. 20) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.
Mikaela Burgess knocked down eight 3-pointers and a game-high 28 points on 10 of 14 shooting to help Pitt State (14-5, 7-3 MIAA) break open a three-point game after halftime.
Brenlee McPherson added 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while Paige Imhoff chipped in with 11 points and six assists for the Gorillas.Â
The Gorillas shot 58.3 percent in the pivotal third quarter when Pitt State outscored WU (13-5, 5-4 MIAA), 18-7, to build a 56-42 cushion.
Alexis McAfee led the Ichabods with 17 points while Axelle Bernard posted a double double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. She also registered five blocked shots. The Ichabods shot just 38.9 percent from the floor in the game (21-54) and committed 14 turnovers.
