PITTSBURG -- Grant Lozoya scored a career-high 33 points, including 24 points in the second half, as the Pittsburg State University men's basketball team rallied for a 92-84 victory over East Central University Friday (Nov. 23).
The Gorillas (4-1) trailed by as many as nine points, 54-45, with 16:49 to play in the game against the Tigers (2-2).
Pitt State still trailed 70-63 with 9:37 to go but the Gorillas scored eight of the game's next 10 points to trim the deficit to 72-71 on A.J. Walker's driving layup.
ECU pushed back in front 78-74 on Tylor Arnold's 3-pointer with 5:53 remaining, but Trenton Clayton scored an inside basket for the Gorillas and Lozoya tied it up at 78-78 on a jumper with 5:08 to go.
Da'Rion King gave the Tigers their final lead of the game, 80-79, on a layup with 4:26 to go, but Lozoya hit a jumper that started an 8-0 run for the Gorillas. Walker hit a 3-pointer for an 84-80 with 3:16 remaining; Levarity added a dunk and Walker made one of two free throws for an 87-80 advantage with 2:09 remaining.
ECU never got any closer than five points of the Gorillas down the stretch.
Lozoya made 13 of 17 shots from the field in the game to lead all scorers with 33 points. Donovan Franklin added 19 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while Levarity chipped in with 16 points for the Gorillas. Walker (11) and Clayton (10) also scored in double figures.
ECU got a team-leading 27 points from Camron Tally. Arnold and Josh Hill also scored 11 points apiece for the Tigers.
