PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team swept a pair of games from Minot State University Sunday (Feb. 18). The Gorillas downed the Beavers, 18-9 and 8-2, to take three of four games in the series from the Beavers.
In game one, Pitt State overcame an early 3-0 deficit to take a 9-4 lead after plating five runs in the third inning and three more runs in the fourth.
Minot battled back to knot the score, 9-9, in the top of the sixth, but Hunter Clanin singled home Joven Afenir with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the frame and Pitt State tacked on three more runs in a four-run sixth inning to go back in front, 13-9.
Clanin went 2-for-3 with four runs scored and three RBIs for the Gorillas, while Josh Whisler went 3-for-6 with four RBIs. Reece Garvie had three hits and three runs driven in. Colton Pogue also recorded four hits and scored four runs.
Brad Kinsey (1-0) allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings of relief work to pick up the win. Nick Brown held the Beavers hitless with five strikeouts over the final three innings to pick up the save.
In game two, the Gorillas (6-4) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and rode that momentum to an 8-2 victory over the Beavers (1-3).
Jarret Dotson held Minot hitless over the first three innings in his collegiate debut before running into trouble in the fourth inning. Cooper Gardner (1-1) worked 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief to secure the victory.
Tyler Cushman went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Clanin and Pogue both collected two hits apiece. Cody White belted a solo home run for the Gorillas.
