DURANT, Okla. — The Pittsburg State University softball team scored a pair of one-run victories Sunday (Feb. 4) to close out the three-day Southeastern Oklahoma State University Invitational. The Gorillas held on for a 6-5 win over East Central University to open the day then claimed a 2-1 extra-inning victory over the host school, Southeastern Oklahoma, to complete the day's action.
In game one, Pitt State (3-3) built a 6-1 lead then held off a comeback bid by ECU to preserve the 6-5 win.
Kristan VanHoosen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Gorillas' nine-hit attack. Daniela Garzon added a two-run double as part of the Gorillas three-run fifth inning. Bree Cornett (1-2) allowed four runs in five innings of work to earn the victory, while Brittany Beaudet struck out five of the final six outs to earn the save.
In game two, Pitt State battled back from a 1-0 deficit with a tying run in the top of the sixth and the Gorillas pushed across the winning run in the eighth for a 2-1 win over SOSU.
The Gorillas capitalized on a pair of errors, and a double by Kaity Kukowski, to tie the game in the sixth inning. In the eighth, Kala Holder scored the go-ahead run in international tiebreaker after Kukowski and Kristan VanHoosen delivered back-to-back hits.
Brooklynne Simbeck (2-1) allowed just four hits in 7 1/3 innings of work and Beaudet registered her second save in as many games by retiring the final two outs of the game.
