Softball Splits with Lynn

Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. -- The Pittsburg State University softball team split the doubleheader with Lynn University on Friday (Feb. 9). Pitt State won the first game, 3-1, before falling in the second, 5-1.

Pitt State scored its three runs on four hits and two errors, while Lynn had five hits. 

The Gorillas' runs came in the fourth, and sixth inning. Kala Holder hit her third HR of the season in the top of the 4th. Katy Kukowski reached on error in the top of the 6th and scored two runs to give the Gorillas the lead 3-1.

Gorilla pitcher Bree Cornett pitched the complete game to improve her record to 2-2. She struck out two batters and only allowed five hits. 

Pitt State had 5 hits in game two, but was only able to plate one run. The Fighting Knights scored five runs on 9 hits and one Gorilla error. 

The Gorillas tied it at 1-1 in the top of the second. With runners on first and second, Kristen Van Hoosen hit a RBI single to score Kaity Kukowski.  

Pitt State's scoring would stop there, while Lynn added four runs in the third.

Brooklynne Simbeck started the game in the circle for the Gorillas and pitched 2.2 innings in the loss (2-2). She gave up five runs, on five hits. Brittany Beaudet threw the final 3.1 innings, and only allowed four hits. 

Lynn starter Kayla Sheffield earned the win. She pitched 6.0 innings only allowing four hits and recorded three strikeouts.  

Pitt State will have face a doubleheader against Nova Southeastern on Friday (Feb. 10). The first pitch is set for noon (CST).
