MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Joey Witthus scored a game-high 36 points to spark unbeaten and No. 2 ranked Northwest Missouri State University to a 111-83 victory over the Pittsburg State University men's baskeball team Thursday (Jan. 31) at Bearcat Arena.
Witthus made 13 of 19 shots from the field, including eight 3-pointers, as the Bearcats improved to 20-0 overall (10-0 MIAA). NWMSU shot 55.6 percent from the field (40-72) and the Bearcats converted 18 3-pointers in the contest.
Witthus led all five NWMSU starters in double figures. Trevor Hudgins added 21 points and 12 assists, while Ryan Hawkins also posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Diego Bernard (16) and Ryan Welty (12) also finished the contest in double figures.
Pitt State (14-6, 7-4 MIAA) got a team-leading 21 points from Donovan Franklin, while Demetrius Levarity added 10 points. The Gorillas shot 54 percent from the field (34-63), but Pitt State was victimized by 18 turnovers in the contest.
The Gorillas will return to action Saturday (Feb. 2) with a 4 p.m. road match-up against Missouri Western State University at St. Joseph, Mo.
