Swedes Knock Off Gorillas, 93-89, in High Scoring Affair


PITTSBURG -- Justin Jones hit the last of 23 3-point field goals for the Bethany College men's basketball team in the game's waning seconds to help seal a 93-89 road win over Pittsburg State University Tuesday (Dec. 31) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court. 

Jones poured in a game high 35 points to lead the Swedes to the victory. He made 11 of 18 shots from the field in the game, including seven 3-pointers. Isiah Saenz added 21 second half points for Bethany. He missed his first eight shots from the floor but connected of seven of eight shots in the second half. Saenz added nine assists in the contest as well before fouling out with 1:32 to play.

Dejon Waters Jr. led four Gorillas in double figures with a season high 21 points. A.J. Walker added 19 points and five assists, while Jah-Kobe Womack (16) and Marcel Cherry (13) also scored in double figures.

The Gorillas (4-7) shot 50 percent from the field in the game (33-66), but Pitt State was victimized by 17 turnovers in the contest.

The Gorillas will resume MIAA action Saturday (Jan. 4) when they travel to Kearney, Neb., to take on the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
