PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team split a doubleheader against Winona State University Sunday (Feb. 17) at Al Ortolani FIeld. The Gorillas rallied from a 4-0 deficit for a 6-4 win over the Warriors in game one, before falling 11-2 in the night cap.
Clint Allen doubled in Tyson Cushman with the tying run in the sixth inning of game one. Allen then scored on Tyler Pittman's RBI single for the go-ahead run.
The Gorillas (5-4) fell behind 4-0 to WSU (1-1), before Reece Garvie belted a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Kory Haught recorded the final three outs for his second save of the season. Brendan Stanek (1-0) won the game in relief, allowing two runs in 2.0 innings of work.
In the nightcap, Ty Herrenbruck gave Pitt State an early 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Gorillas failed to plate another run in the contest.
Dillon Whittaker (1-0) limited the Gorillas to one hit over the final five innings. He retired the final 13 Pitt State batters to end the game.
