Gorillas Lead From Start to Finish in 82-76 Win Over Lady Hornets


EMPORIA, Kan. — The Pittsburg State University women's basketball team never trailed and controlled the scoreboard throughout the night in an 82-76 road win over Emporia State University Thursday (Feb. 21) at W.L. White Auditorium.
 
The Gorillas (20-6, 12-5 MIAA) snapped a six-game losing streak in the series to the Lady Hornets (20-6, 11-5 MIAA) while snapping ESU's eight-game win streak this season.
 
Kaylee DaMitz scored a career-high 22 points to pace the Gorillas. She made four of eight shots from the floor and 13 of 14 free throw attempts as Pitt State outscored the Lady Hornets, 26-10, at the foul line in the contest.
 
The Gorillas shot 60 percent from the field in the first half, making 15 of 25 shots to take a 40-27 lead at the intermission. Pitt State made just nine of 24 shots (.375) in the second half, but the Gorillas converted 23 of 26 free throws in the final 20 minutes of play.
 
Maya Williams added 21 points and nine rebounds for the Gorillas, while Athena Alvarado added 11 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
 
The Lady Hornets got a team-leading 21 points from Tyra Jones, while Jessica Wayne finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and six steals.
 
ESU shot just 39 percent from the field in the game, making 28 of 71 attempts. The Lady Hornets owned a 14-8 advantage in offensive rebounds and ESU forced pitt State into 22 turnovers in the contest.
 
The Gorillas will return to action next Thursday (Feb. 28) when Pitt State travels to Kearney, Neb., to battle the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
