Gorillas, Ichabods Split Twinbill Friday

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team split a doubleheader against Washburn University Friday (Mar. 1) at Al Ortolani Field. The Gorillas claimed a 12-3 win in the series opener, before the Ichabods responded with a 7-0 victory in game two.

The two squads will wrap up the three-game series with an 11 a.m. (CST) contest Saturday (Mar. 2).

PSU (8-6, 3-2 MIAA) broke open a 2-2 game with four runs in the eighth and added six more runs in the top of the ninth in game one. The Gorillas played as the visitor in the doubleheader after the Ichabods were forced to more their home games to Pittsburg due to inclement weather in Topeka.

Brad Kinsey (3-0) allowed just three hits in 8.0 innings of work on the mound. He walked three and fanned seven batters in lowering his season ERA to 1.53.

Caleb Cox went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Chaz Burgess went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Clint Allen also knocked in three runs in the contest.

In game two, WU starter Jacob Head (1-1) combined with relievers Trevor Marreel and Jake Butterfield to two-hit the Gorillas. Head allowed two hits in 6.0 innings of work, registering five strikeouts. The Ichabods (7-7, 2-3 MIAA) broke open a 1-0 game with four runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth.
