PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team capitalized on a pair of walks and a pair of throwing errors by Northwest Missouri State University to plate a two-out run that sealed a 3-2 extra-inning win Saturday (Mar. 16).
The Gorillas (12-9, 7-4 MIAA) rallied from a 2-0 deficit against the Bearcats (9-12, 5-6 MIAA) with Ty Herrenbruck delivering a two-run game-tying home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Pitt State won it in the bottom of the 10th when pinch runner Jamie Mueller scored from third base on Caleb Cox's two-out grounder. Cox's ball was scooped up by Bearcats' shortstop Logan Rycraft, but his toss across the diamond skipped past first baseman Connor Quick as Mueller trotted home.
Greyson Pinkett started the frame by reaching on a one-out throwing error. Alex Achtermann drew a walk against reliever Trevor Dudar (1-1), prompting Mueller to run for Pinkett at second base. Chaz Burgess struck out and Herrenbruck then drew a walk to load the bases.
Achtermann allowed four hits and two earned runs in 6.0 innings of work. Justin Root held the Bearcats hitless in 2.0 inings of relief work and Tanner Lane (1-2) earned the win by limited NWMSU to one hit over the final 2.0 innings while registering three strikeouts.
NWMSU's Quintin Van Ackeren limited Pitt State to three hits in 6 2/3 innings on the mound. He issued four walks and struck out six batters.
The Gorillas and Bearcats will wrap up their three-game MIAA series with a Noon (CDT) game Sunday (Mar. 17).
