Ichabods Hold Off Gorillas, 99-94, in MIAA Tournament Semifinals


KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Javion Blake scored a game-high 34 points to help lead the Washburn University men's basketball team to a 99-94 victory over Pittsburg State University in the semifinals of the 2019 MIAA Postseason Tournament Saturday (Mar. 9) at historic Municipal Auditorium.

The Ichabods (24-6) advance to the 2019 MIAA Postseason Tournament Finals Sunday at 1 p.m. (CDT) against unbeaten and No. 1 ranked Northwest Missouri State University. The Bearcats (31-0) downed Lincoln University, 86-69, in Saturday's fist semifinal match-up.

Blake made 13 of 21 shots from the floor to lead a WU squad that shot 57.8 percent from the field in the game (37-64). David Salach added 21 points and eight rebounds for the Ichabods, while Tyler Geiman chipped in with 17 points, seven rebounds and a game-high seven assists.

Grant Lozoya scored 26 points to pace the Gorillas (17-13), while Donovan Franklin added 25 points. Franklin became the 25th player in Pitt State history to reach 1,000 career points in the contest. Demetrius Levarity added 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while Christian Edmondson finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Gorillas.

Pitt State converted 27 of 32 free throws in the contest, outscoring the Ichabods by 12 points at the foul line. WU made 15 of 23 charity shots.
