Gorillas Take Series From Griffons With 14-10 Win

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team capitalized on an eight-run sixth inning to rally from an 8-6 deficit en route to an eventual 14-10 win over Missouri Western State University Saturday (Apr. 20) at Al Ortolani Field.

The Gorillas (23-18, 15-12 MIAA) got a bases loaded double from John Oliver and a bases loaded triple from Tyler Pittman in the pivotal sixth frame against the Griffons (18-17, 15-12 MIAA).

Tyson Cushman led Pitt State's 13-hit offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Cushman came up a home run short of hitting for the cycle. Oliver and Caleb Cox also had two hits apiece. Pittman scored three times and Chaz Burgess belted his fifth home run of the season.

Tyler Root (3-1) earned the win in relief. He allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings of work. Tanner Lane registered his eighth save of the season.

By taking two of three games in the series against MWSU, Pitt State climbed into a three-way tie for fifth place in the MIAA standings with the Griffons and Lindenwood.
