Gorillas Set To Clash With Bronchos

EDMOND, Okla.—The Pittsburg State University Gorillas volleyball team will look to start the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) with a 2-0 record on Friday night. Pitt State will have a tough task on hand as they travel to the University of Central Oklahoma for a clash with the Bronchos at 6 p.m. at Hamilton Field House.
 
Scouting the Gorillas
  • The Gorillas head into the weekend with a one-game winning streak after they opened up the MIAA portion of their schedule on Tuesday with a four set win over Missouri Southern. They are now 6-3 on the season.
  • Morgan Henning is the top hitter for the Gorillas as she has a .366 hitting percentage to sit fifth in the league. She has 84 kills, the seventh most in the MIAA. Teammate Erika Ivkov is sixth in the conference by averaging 3.31 kills per set. Ivkov is tied for second in the MIAA with 14 aces and tied for fourth in with 0.44 aces per set.
  • As a team, the Gorillas sit in fourth in the MIAA with 16.57 digs per set.
 
Scouting the Bronchos
  • UCO enters the match on a five-match winning streak as they hold an 8-2 overall record. The Bronchos opened the season with wins over Malone (3-0), West Liberty (3-0) and Tiffin (3-1) before falling to Eckerd (1-3) and Oklahoma Baptist (1-3). Since than they have rebounded with five straight wins. They defeated East Central (3-0), Southern Nazarene (3-1), Cameron (3-0), Arkansas-Monticello (3-0) and Southeastern Oklahoma (3-0). Overall on the season, the Bronchos have a set record of 26-8.
  • The Bronchos enter this weekend receiving votes in the latest (Sept. 15) AVCA Coaches Poll.
  • Dominique Lipari leads Central Oklahoma as last week she had a fantastic week, racking up 124 digs. She had at least 20 digs in all five matches, with a high of 32, and averaged 7.29 digs per set while adding six service aces. Lipari moved into third place on UCO's career digs list over the weekend.
  • Ericka Scholl leads the MIAA with service aces with 15, an average of 0.44 per set to sit in tie for fourth.
  • As a team, the Bronchos are sitting in fourth in the MIAA with 13.50 kills per set, while they lead the conference in aces with 1.82 per set. They also sit in second with 18.50 digs per set.

  • The Gorillas return home next week for three straight home conference games against ranked opponents. The Gorillas will host No. 17 Rockhurst (6 p.m.) on Tuesday, No. 15 Northwest Missouri (6 p.m.)  on Friday and No. 12 Central Missouri (2 p.m.) on Saturday.
