Gorillas Head to Wichita for MIAA Tilt with Newman

WICHITA, Kan.—The Pittsburg State University Gorillas will take on the Newman Jets on Tuesday night in Fugate Gymnasium.

Scouting the Gorillas
  • The Gorillas will look to bounce back from three straight losses against ranked opponents last week. 
  • Head Coach Jen Gomez, who is in her third season at the helm, enters the match with a 38-68 record.
  • The Gorillas have three players with triple digits in kills this season. Senior outside hitter Erika Ivkov (Weld, Colo.) has 145 for an average of 3.15 per set while sophomore Morgan Henning (Seneca, Mo.) has 125 (2.55 per set) and sophomore outside hitter Meg Auten (Manhattan, Kan.) has 105 (2.33 per set).
  • Sophomore setter Brianna Richard (Ames, Iowa) has a team-high 313 assists (6.66 per set) while freshman setter Laura Willoughby (Lawrence, Kan.) has 188 assists (5.88 per set).
  • Henning is sitting second in the MIAA with a hitting percentage of .353 on the season.

Scouting the Jets
  • Newman heads into the game looking for their first win of the season as they are 0-13. 
  • They are 0-4 in the MIAA as they dropped a four-set match to Missouri Southern, and three-set matches to Central Oklahoma, Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays.
  • The Jets are on a 16-game losing streak dating back to last year. It is also the Jet's first year in the MIAA as they were in the Heartland Conference last season.
  • Sophomore Trinity Conley (Wichita, Kan.) leads the Jets this season with 161 kills (3.43 per set). She is hitting .163 as she has also taken a team-high 516 attacks. She is sitting fourth in the MIAA with her average.
  • Junior Reagen Roth (Tulsa, Okla.) is the pivotal setter for the Jets with 314 assists on the season (6.98 assists per set).

History
  • The Gorillas lead the all-time series with a 9-3 overall record and have won 26 sets while only dropping nine.
  • This will be the third time these two teams have met since 2007. The Gorillas are 2-0 as they won all three matches (2007, 2010 & 2011) in three straight sets.

Up Next
  • The Gorillas will remain on the road for a Thursday MIAA match against Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo. before returning home next Friday and Saturday for home matches against Emporia State (6 p.m.) on Friday and Washburn (2 p.m.) on Saturday at John Lance Arena.
