ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Meghan Maher tipped away the game's final pass attempt, knocking the ball into backcourt as time expired to allow the Pittsburg State University women's basketball team to preserve a 61-59 road win over Missouri Western State University.
The Gorillas (15-9, 11-5 MIAA) earned the season sweep of the Griffons (18-7, 10-6 MIAA) after Pitt State claimed a 74-71 home win over Western last Wednesday in Pittsburg.
Athena Alvarado posted a double double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. She scored 17 of her game high points in the first half. Maher added 13 points and a career high four steals in the contest. Tristan Gegg added 11 points and Kaylee DaMitz, returning to the Pitt State lineup after missing last Saturday's game with an ankle injury, added nine points – all in the second half.
The Gorillas overcome a 38.6 percent shooting night (22-57) by making five more 3-point field goals (7-2) than Western and by outscoring the Griffons, 10-5, at the free throw line.
Corbyn Cunningham paced the Griffons with 15 points.
