PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team scored one or more runs in each of the first five innings and the Gorillas got timely outs defensively to defeat Fort Hays State University, 9-3, Sunday (Mar. 1) at Al Ortolani Field.
The victory allowed the Gorillas (11-7, 2-1 MIAA) to take two of three games in the MIAA series from the Tigers (11-8, 1-2 MIAA).
FHSU outhit Pitt State, 15-14, but the Tigers stranded 18 baserunners in the contest.
Tyler Pittman and Reece Garvie each belted home runs for the Gorillas. Pittman finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Garvie went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Mason Hartman also went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Ryan Kovan doubled twice and drove in a run, while Ty Herrenbruck went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Tanner Lane (2-1) scattered five hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief work to earn the victory.
