TOPEKA — The Pittsburg State University softball team closed out the three-day Washburn University Invitational with a pair of wins Sunday (Mar. 1). The Gorillas scored a 3-0 victory over the University of Sioux Falls and a 9-8 victory over Rockhurst University.
Pitt State (9-15) posted a 4-2 record in the tournament.
In game one Sunday, Kaylee Burnett posted a four-hit shutout in the victory over the Cougars. Pitt State plated three runs in the bottom of the third inning to provide Burnett all the offense she would need. Mackenzie Goswick belted a two-run home run as part of the three-run inning.
Burnett (4-6) walked one batter and registered four strikeouts in the game. She posted a one hitter in a 1-0 victory over the University of Minnesota Crookston Saturday.
In game two, Kianna Pellegrino singled home Mareika Turpen with the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to break an 8-8 tie. Turpen drew a two-out walk and advanced to second base when Makayla Lamphier reached on a fielding error.
Lamphier went 3-for-4 at the plate in the game. Kaity Kukowski also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
