TOPEKA — The Pittsburg State University softball team split an MIAA doubleheader against Washburn University Saturday (Mar. 7). The Ichabods blanked the Gorillas, 4-0, in the opener before Pitt State grabbed an early lead and hung on for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
Following the twinbill split, the Gorillas are now 11-17 overall and 2-2 in MIAA play. WU is now 14-13, 2-2 MIAA.
Pitt State struck for three runs in the top of the first inning in the nightcap against the Ichabods. Madison Szymanski had an RBI double as part of the Gorillas big inning. Kylee Bohle went 1-for-4 with two RBIs in the contest and Kaity Kukowski finished the game 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Shelby Smith (3-6) earned the win in the circle, while Kaylee Burnett picked up her first save of the season by working three scoress innings of relief.
The Gorillas were limited to a pair of hits in the opener.
