Â
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) has released its updated 2020 football schedule today (June 16).
MIAA football teams will now play 10-game schedules beginning the week of September 12 after recommendations were approved in May by the NCAA Division II Presidents Council to reduce the maximum number of contests in all sports due to the financial implications that resulted from the nationwide Covid-19 pandemic.
The Pittsburg State University football team will open its 2020 football season Saturday, September 12, by hosting Missouri Southern State University at 7 p.m. For the first time in several years, the MIAA will not have any Thursday games in week one or week two.
Â
The Gorillas five-game home slate features a Family Day match-up against Lincoln University on September 26 at 7 p.m. Pitt State also will play host to MIAA rival Fort Hays State University for Homecoming on October 17. at 1:30 p.m.
Â
The Gorillas also will host Missouri Western State University on October 31 at 1:30 p.m. and Washburn University on November 14 at 1:30 p.m.
Due to the reduction to a 10-game schedule for 2020, each MIAA school will have one league foe they do not face. In Pitt State's case, the Gorillas will not play the University of Central Oklahoma this fall. The MIAA plans to return to an 11-game schedule in 2021.
Â
New head coach Brian Wright and his coaching staff returns eight players (4 offense, 4 defense) who started seven or more games during the 2019 campaign.
Â
"We are excited to finally release our 2020 football schedule," PSU Athletics Director Jim Johnson said. "Obviously so much has happened in the world over the last three months that it took a great deal of due diligence for the NCAA and its membership to determine there will be fall sports on campuses and then what those fall sports seasons would look like. We are looking forward to seeing the Gorillas on the field soon!"
