EMPORIA,, Kan. -- The Emporia State University men's basketball team scored the game's final six points to rally in the waning minutes for a 75-72 victory over Pittsburg State University Thursday (Jan. 14) at William L. White Auditorium.
The win helped the Hornets (6-4, 6-4 MIAA) snap a three-game losing streak, while the Gorillas leveled their record at .500 (5-5, 5-5 MIAA).
Pitt State led 72-69 on Ryan Pippins jumper with 1:34 to play in the contest, but Pitt State failed to score again down the stretch. Jumah'Ri Turner knotted the score at 72-27 with a conventional three-point play with 1:19 to go.
After Pitt State's Martin Vogts missed on a 3-pointer, Austin Downey gave the Hornets the lead, 74-72, with a jumper with 45 seconds remaining. The Gorillas turned the ball over on their next possession and Downing made one of two free throws with 19 seconds left for the game's final margin. Pippin missed on a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the waning seconds for Pitt State.
Bobby Arthur-Williams Jr. and Cameron Huefner paced Pitt State with 15 points apiece while Vogts added 14 points and Quentin Hardrict Jr. chipped in with 10 points.
Turner led all scorers with 24 points for the Hornets.
Pitt State will return to action Saturday (Jan. 16) when the Gorillas travel to Lee Arena at Topeka to battle No. 5 ranked Washburn University at 3 p.m. (CST).
