PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University women's basketball team used a 15-0 run midway through the second half to battle back from a double digit deficit and eventually claim a 70-67 victory over Missouri Southern State University Saturday (Jan. 9) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.
The Gorillas (6-3, 6-3 MIAA) secured their fifth consecutive win with the decision, while snapping the Lady Lions (4-4, 4-4 MIAA) four-game skein.
Kaylee Damitz scored a game high 25 points to pace Pitt State, while Tristan Gegg added 15. Gegg's 3-pointer with 9:06 to play in the fourth quarter gave the Gorillas a 55-52 lead.
MSSU had led by as many as 12 points (40-28) and the Lady Lions led 52-43 with 1:22 to play in the third quarter before Pitt State rattled off 15 straight points.
The Gorillas led by as many as seven points down the stretch but the Lady Lions wouldn't go away. Carley Turnbull's 3-pointer pulled MSSU within a point, 68-67, with 24 seconds to go, but DaMitz and Maya Williams each converted one of two free throws in the waning seconds to help the Gorillas hold on.
Pitt State will travel to Emporia, Kan., Thursday (Jan. 14) to battle MIAA rival Emporia State University at 5:30 p.m. (CST).
