ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Pittsburg State University football team broke open a 7-0 game with a 17 point second quarter and the Gorillas rolled to a 34-14 victory over Missouri Western State University Saturday (Oct. 23).

The Gorillas (6-2, 6-2 MIAA) used a big fourth down play to spur the offensive output in the second period. Facing a 4
th and 1 at Pitt State's 33 yard line, the Gorillas dialed up a first down run by Tyler Adkins. Seven plays later, Adkins capped the 11-play, 91 yard drive with a five yard touchdown run to give Pitt State a 14-0 lead.

The Gorillas added a 50-yard field goal from Cross Holmes with 2:06 to play in the first half. The Pitt State defense then forced a quick three and out series by the Griffons (3-5, 3-5 MIAA) and the Gorillas cashed in once again before the half as Mak Sexton tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Martin with 14 seconds remaining in the first half.

Pitt State stretched its margin to 27-0 early in the third quarter on a 27-yard field goal from Holmes.

Sexton capped the Gorillas scoring with a 12-yard touchdown connection to Devon Garrison with 14:51 to play in the game.

Sexton completed 19 of 29 passes in the game for 224 yards. Martin caught four passes for 70 yards while Bryce Murphy had three grabs for 44 yards. Adkins carried the ball 15 times for 74 yards.
The Gorillas struck on the first play of the game as Dallis Flowers returned the opening kickoff 98 yards to give Pitt State a 7-0 lead 13 seconds into the contest.

Defensively, was credited with a team-leading seven tackles, while Jordan Hendy had six stops along with a fourth quarter interception.

The Gorillas will return to action next Saturday (Oct. 30) when they play host to the University of Central Oklahoma at 1 p.m.
