Bearcats Hold Off Gorillas Down Stretch for 81-72 Win

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team used a 15-2 run to start the second half to help propel the Bearcats to an 81-72 victory over Pittsburg State University Saturday (Nov. 20).

Pitt State (0-4) took a 43-37 lead at the intermission on the strength of a combined 22 points from Cameron Huefner and Iziah James. SBU (3-1) charged out of the blocks scoring 15 of the first 17 points of the second half to go in front, 52-45, on Joe Miller's inside basket with 14:43 to play in the game.

The Bearcats never trailed down the stretch. The Gorillas closed within a point, at 65-64, and Pitt State trailed just 69-67 on Tyler Hawkins' 3-pointer with 3:44 remaining, but SBU countered with five straight points to push its cushion back to seven.

Huefner, James and Ryan Pippins each finished with 13 points to lead the Gorillas. Hawkins chipped in with 11 points.

Mitch Ganote scored a game high 22 points for SBU. He added 11 rebounds and six assists.

The Gorillas will return to action Wednesday (Nov. 24) when they travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., to battle Henderson State University.
