Arkadelphia, Ark. – The Henderson State University men's basketball team used free throws down the stretch to hold off the Pittsburg State University men's basketball team, 59-57.
With less then two minutes left to play the Gorillas found itself down seven. Two quick possessions by Pitt State would cut the lead to two points with just under a minute to play.
A quick foul by the Gorillas would bring the Reddies to the line. The two free throws would make it a four point game with 13 seconds left to play. A quick layup by Ryan Pippins would bring the game within two once again.
After two missed free throws by the Reddies the Gorillas would have the ball with five seconds remaining and a chance to tie or take the lead. But a turnover by Pippins in the final seconds would give the Reddies the win, 59-57.
Pippins would finish with 21 points for the Gorillas. He shot 6-10 (60%) from the field and 1-2 from beyond the arc. Iziah James also chipped in 10 points on the night.
Henderson State's Malik Riddle had a team leading 18 points. The Reddies would win the turnover battle with 19 and forcing the Gorillas into 20.
Pitt State will be back in action Saturday (Nov. 27) at 3:30 p.m. (CST) to take on Baker in its final non-conference game of the season.
