PITTSBURG – The Pittsburg State University softball team ended its season after failing to Northwest Missouri State in doubleheader action Saturday (Mar 1) 8-6, 10-7.
The Gorillas fell to the Bearcats ion game one 8-6 after a hot start by the Bearcats put them up 6-1 after three innings. The Gorillas would crawl back into the game after hits by designated player Taylor Lambert and shortstop Kori Stonestreet lead to a three run sixth inning. A home run by catcher Madison Szymanski in the seventh would give the game its final score of 8-6.
In game one senior Kaylee Burns started her final game as a Gorillas. Burns finished the season with a 8-12 record.
Game two would go the way of the Bearcats thanks to a few big innings. The Gorillas would take a three to one lead off the bat of center fielder Keelah Griffith's three run slam. Northwest Missouri would take a 6-3 lead after three. First baseman Lauren Florez would drive in a run for the Gorillas in the third to make it 6-4. The Bearcats would answer with four runs in the next two innings to increase its lead 10-4.
Another homer by Griffith would put the Gorillas with in for after five. Griffith would drive in another run in the seventh to give the game a final score fo 10-7.
Junior Taylor Compton was credited with ht loss in game two. Compton finished the season with a 4-9 record.
