Pitt State to Make Home Debut Hosting Gorilla Classic Tournament



PITTSBURG – The Pittsburg State University volleyball team will make its home debut at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court by hosting the Gorilla Classic Tournament Thursday through Saturday (Sept. 9-11).
 
The Gorillas will battle four different teams over the course of the three-day tournament starting with a 7 p.m. match-up Thursday against Truman.
 
On Friday, Pitt State will face Northwestern Oklahoma State at 9 a.m. and Sioux Falls (S.D.) at 2 p.m. In all, Friday's action will feature five matches.
 
The tournament will conclude with four matches Saturday starting at 9 a.m. The Gorillas close out their slate of games by battling St. Mary's (Texas) at 3 p.m.

Admission is $10 per person on Friday on Saturday. Thursday's match is free of charge.
 
In accordance with Pittsburg State's Covid-19 Face Mask Policy, fans (regardless of vaccination status) must wear a face mask covering their mouths and noses at indoor events when social distancing is not possible.
 
Scouting the Gorillas
  • The Gorillas enter the tournament with a 2-2 mark after starting the season in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., at the Nova Southeastern Shark Invitational.
  • The Gorillas took down Quincy in straight sets to start off the season and Pitt State wrapped up the tournament action with a 3-1 victory over Stonehill.
 
Scouting the Opposition
  • Truman enters Thursday's action with a 2-2 mark after spending time in Jackson, Tenn., at the Union University Tournament. The Bulldogs took down the Dragons of Lane College in their first match of the season, 3-1. Truman also notched a victory against Florida Tech, 3-2.
  • Northwestern Oklahoma State enters the classic with an 0-4 mark after the Angelo State Tournament. The Rangers finished with a 9-6 record in the Covid-19 shortened 2020 season.
  • Sioux Falls arrives in Pittsburg with a 3-1 record after a strong performance in the Oredigger Classic in Colorado. The Cougars defeated Grand Valley State, Midwestern State and Colorado Christian to start the season. Sioux Fall's only loss came to No. 22 Colorado Mesa.
  • Saint Mary's is a perfect 3-0 on the young season after the Oklahoma Christian Tournament. The Rattlers downed Lubbock Christian, 3-2, to start its season before adding wins against Bentley (3-1) and OCU (3-2).
