WICHITA — The Newman University men's basketball team outscored Pittsburg State University, 15-7, over the final 3:56 to break open a two-point game and pull away for a 73-63 victory Saturday (Feb. 26) in the regular season finale for both squads.
Pitt State wraps up the season with an 8-20 overall and record and 7-15 mark in MIAA play. Newman ended the year 6-21 overall and 3-19 in the MIAA.
Magic Reliford and R.J. Lawrence paced the Gorillas with 12 points apiece in the game. Reliford connected on four of six 3-point field goals. Ryan Pippens added 10 points and Dejon Waters Jr. finished with nine points and six rebounds. Pitt State shot just 34.0 percent from the field in the game, making 17 of 50 shots.
Stevie Strong poured in a game high 26 points to lead the Jets. Israel Barnes finished with 17.
