Gorillas Bow Out in First Round


KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hunter Bentley scored a game high 20 points to lead the Washburn University women's basketball team to a 59-53 victory over Pittsburg State University in the first round of the 2022 MIAA Championships presented by Citizens Bank & Trust.
 
The Ichabods (14-15), the tournament's No. 9 seed, advances to the quarterfinals to meet top-seeded Missouri Southern State University Thursday (Mar. 3) at Noon (CST) at Municipal Auditorium. The Gorillas end the season with a 16-13 overall record.
 
Pitt State shot just 30.5 percent from the field in the game, making only 18 of 59 shots. The Gorillas struggled from the perimeter, converting just three of 17 3-point field goal attempts.
 
Jenna Shipley scored a team-leading 12 points in 22 minutes of reserve action for the Gorillas. Jayme Jackson added 11 points and seven rebounds. Tristan Gegg finished with nine points.
 
The Ichabods, who shot 39.5 percent from the floor in the game, got 13 points from Shae Sanchez and 10 points from Nuria Barrientos to go along with Bentley's scoring production.
