PITTSBURG – The Pittsburg State University softball team rounded out the 2022 season with a pair of wins over Newman University on Sunday (May 1), 8-0, 9-4.
The Gorillas would come out of the gates firing after a two run shot by Paxtyn Hayes to give the Gorillas an early 2-0 lead in game one. The fireworks would not stop there as in the fourth Kyndall Davis would smash a three run home run over the scoreboard to give Pitt State a 5-0 lead. Pitt State would add three more runs in the 5th and 6th to take the run rule victory 8-0 in game one.
Abby Atkins would pitch all six innings and would allow only four hits and no runs in her final outing as a Gorilla.
In game two the Gorillas would lead off the bottom of the first with three runs to take an early 3-0 lead over the Jets. Newman would tie the game back up in the second 3-3. The Gorillas and Jets would enter the fifth inning tied at four a piece. Pitt State would add four runs in the fifth off the bats of Gabby Schultz and a Kianna Pellegrino 3-run blast to deep center field to give the Gorillas an 8-4 lead. Hayes would add another run for the Gorillas in the 6th to give the game a final score of 9-4.Â
Pitt State rounds out the 2022 campaign with a 25-26 record and a 7-19 record in the MIAA.
