PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team broke open a tight game with five runs in the third inning and an eight-run fifth frame as the Gorillas defeated Regis University, 16-3, Sunday (Feb. 12) at Al Ortolani Field.

The win allowed Pitt State (5-2) to take three of four games in the weekend series against the visiting Rangers (4-4).

Brevon Lee delivered a three-run home run as part of Pitt State's five-run third inning, helping take a 2-0 lead to 7-0 after that frame. Brett Daley also smacked a solo home run in the third.

Daley added an RBI double in the fifth, while Joe Hamilton delivered a two-run triple and Nixon Brannan, who homered twice Saturday, added a two-run blast as the Gorillas stretched their lead to 15-1 following the fifth frame.

Ben Des Rosiers (1-0) picked up his first win of the season. Des Rosiers allowed two runs, one earned, in 5.1 innings of work. He issued two walks and fanned four batters. Harold Baez, Boston Dowd, and Chase Terrell combined to record the final 11 outs, limiting the Rangers to two hits and one run the rest of the way.

Cade Clemons led Pitt State's 14-hit attack by going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Austin Warkins, Brannan, Lee and Daley all collected two hits each.

The Gorillas will return to Al Ortolani Field to host three days of action against Metro State University and the University Sioux Falls starting next Friday (Feb. 17).
