TOPEKA - The Pittsburg State University softball team won two of their games against Missouri-St. Louis and St. Cloud State Saturday (Feb.25) at the Washburn Invitational.
The Gorillas defeated the Tritons of UMSLÂ 7-2 early in the afternoon then followed up with a walk-off victory over the Huskies of St. Cloud State in the evening at Gahnstrom Field at Washburn University
Game One
The Gorillas got their scoring started in the top of the second inning with a Kadyn Trochim two-run home run to right center to give the Gorillas a 2-0 lead. Then the Gorillas would score again in the top of the third off of an RBI single from Paxtyn Hayes. Another long ball would come in the top of the fourth inning, this time being a solo home run off of the bat of Gracie Sullivan to give the Gorillas a 4-0 lead. The Gorillas would put their final three runs up in the top of the seventh with a bases loaded walk from Kylee Bohle, followed by an two-run double from Kadyn Trochim to give the Gorillas a 7-0 lead. The Tritons would put up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Gorillas would shut the door to win 7-2. Pitcher Lilli Weir would go six and a third inning with 11 strikeouts to earn the win.
Game TwoÂ
The Gorillas would give up two runs in the top of the first and second innings before tying the score up at two in the bottom of the second off of two rbi singles from Gracie Sullivan and Keelah Griffith to tie the game at two. The Gorillas and Huskies go scoreless all the way until the bottom of the seventh when the Gorillas would score the game winning run on a walk-off sac-fly from Gabby Schultz driving in Heather Arnett to win the night cap 3-2. Hannah Harrison threw a complete game with eight strikeouts to earn the win in the Circle.
Junior third baseman Kadyn Trochim had a solid day at the plate going 3-6 driving in four runs including a two-run homerun against UMSL. Pitcher Hannah Harrison pitched 7 and two thirds of an inning in two games striking out 10 hitters including back-to-back strikeouts to end game one.Â
The Gorillas will be back in action Sunday (Feb. 26) as they will finish the Washburn invitational against Minnesota-Crookston at 9:30 a.m. at the Lake Shawnee Complex.Â
