ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Harper Schreiner's second-chance basket with 0.5 seconds remaining in regulation lifted the Pittsburg State University women's basketball team to a 68-66 road win over Missouri Western State University Saturday (Feb. 25).
The Griffons (24-6, 18-4 MIAA) knotted the score at 66-66 on a layup by Connie Clark with 15 seconds to play. Following a timeout, Pitt State's Karenna Gerber missed an inside shot but Schreiner snared an offensive rebound. Her putback missed but she followed her shot and beat the buzzer with a follow shot.
Schreiner finished the game with 16 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Grace Pyle poured in a game-high 20 points for the Gorillas (22-6, 17-5 MIAA), while Tristan Gegg added 17 points and Gerber chipped in with 11.
Clarke had a team-leading 16 points for Western. Brionna Budgetts and Jordan Cunningham added 13 points apiece for the Griffs.
The Gorillas led by as many as 11 points in the contest, midway through the second period.
Pitt State wraps up the regular season in fourth place in the 2022-23 MIAA standings. The Gorillas are expected to face Missouri Southern State University in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Postseason Tournament next Friday (Mar. 3) at Kansas City, Mo.
