Gorillas Ride Long Ball to 13-8 Win Over Hornets

PITTSBURG -- Brett Daley smacked a pinch hit grand slam home run as part of a five-run eighth inning to help lift the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 13-8 victory over Emporia State University Tuesday (Apr. 11) at Al Ortolani Field.

Karson Coffee put the Gorillas (27-11, 18-6 MIAA) in front 9-8 in the eighth with a double that plated Austin Warkins with the go-ahead run. Daley followed two batters later with the lethal blow off Hornets reliever Brayden Tower (1-2), who failed to record an out in the frame.

Coffee doubled, homered and drove in three runs for Pitt State, which outhit ESU (15-24, 9-15 MIAA), 16-9, in the contest. Warkins and Ryan Koval also had three hits in the game. Koval and Cade Clemons hit home runs for the Gorillas.

Parker Weddle (2-0), the Gorillas fourth and final reliever, earned the win, allowing one run in 1.2 innings of work. Tanner Leslie registered six strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work. Jordan Duncan, Andrew Wisner and Maverick Hanna also saw mound action for Pitt State.

The Gorillas will host a three-game MIAA series against the University of Central Missouri beginning Friday (Apr. 14) at 3 p.m. (CDT).
